What Is a Computer?

Computers are everywhere. They power websites, games, phones, robots, and even the internet itself.

No matter how complex a computer seems, each one follows the same basic pattern: it receives information, processes that information, and creates output.

In this lesson, you'll learn how computers take input from the world around them, make decisions using instructions, and communicate results back to you, the user.

Input

Before a computer can do anything, it must first receive information. This information is called input.

Input can come from many different devices. Keyboards send keystrokes, mice send movement, microphones send sound, and cameras send images.

Computers don't understand words, pictures, or sounds the way humans do. Every piece of input must be converted into data that the computer can process.
